My name:
Matt Porterfield
My role:
Student Trustee
What does this role involve?
As Trustees we work with the elected Student Leadership Team (SLT) and staff in the running of the Students Association. Trustees are responsible for the strategy, finances, legal and regulatory compliance aspects, and are responsible for ensuring the governance set out in our Articles of Association and various by-laws are followed.
What have you studied / are studying at the OU?
My first (undergraduate) degree was in law. I was amazed when I got a first-class honours, due to some truly amazing tutors, as I never went to university in my youth. This encouraged me to try for a master’s degree, and I’m currently studying the MSc in Finance.
Why have you decided to volunteer?
I have been volunteering with the Students Association ever since 2017, when I answered an email looking for graduation ceremony volunteers. I want to continue my involvement and service with the Association, and believe becoming a Student Trustee fits with my skill set.
What is your previous volunteering experience with the Association?
I started as a graduation ceremony stall volunteer, then later as a co-ordinator. I have served as a student representative on various OU committees at all levels: Board of Studies, Faculty Assembly, Academic Committee, Curriculum Partnership Committee, and finally the top tiers of Senate and Council. In addition, I have been part of non-academic bodies and project teams, representing the student voice. I have been a member of the SLT (Student Leadership Team) as FBL Faculty Representative, Vice-President Administration and Student Member of Council.
What's the summary of what you want to do in your role?
The Association is facing some challenges, mainly due to external factors and a reduction in our funding from the OU (who are also feeling the pinch, post-pandemic). The trading arm, which sells items online and at graduation ceremonies, needs a new strategy, and our costs and budgets going forward will need to fit with the new reality. Our groups, societies and clubs need adequate funding as they are an important touchpoint for our students. Our staff need clear progression opportunities to avoid losing them from the Association. In short, we have work to do!
What are your other interests (away from OU life)?
I have been retired from paid work for many years, and I spend a lot of time (and money) volunteering in various roles, mainly at sporting events now. I retired from being a volunteer magistrate last year after 21 years, and have now invested in a campervan to see more of the country, particularly Scotland.
