Name:
Mark Walker
My role:
Deputy President
My priorities for this term:
My priority is to support the President during the short time until the end of our term, working on the Leadership Team’s priorities with the aim of achieving as many as possible, especially the increase of face-to-face interactions allowing students to give feedback in informal settings.
What I’ve been up to and what I’m currently working on:
I have been working as VP-Student with an emphasis on trying to reduce barriers by working on a project that will provide students with tips and advice throughout their student journey. In addition, I have been acting on behalf of students in Scotland (in the absence of an Area Representative for Scotland) by introducing more face-to-face meet ups for students in northern Scotland, and taking part in the Big Blether online meet-up organised by the Open University in Scotland.
What I'm studying:
I am currently on a study break until later this year when I will commence a second pathway, this time in Mathematics. This will be my second pathway as my first led to a BA (Hons.) Leadership & Management.
What I do when I’m not studying:
As I am not studying (and with Deputy President being a full-time role), my spare time is spent with my dog, travelling, reading books, listening to music, watching movies, walking and swimming, and watching Rugby, Football and NFL.
My top study tips:
If having a study problem or you ‘hit a brick wall’ then stop and do something else, or go for a walk and try again later. If it persists then contact someone to help – either your Tutor, students on social media or out-of-OU groups – or see if there is an OU Students event (either face-to-face or online). Do speak to someone – don’t just sit there thinking it will work out or go away.
