Overview

Join your Students Association and OU academics for a fascinating panel discussion on the environment and sustainability with a focus on what students can do in the face of climate change! Panel Chair, Lou Robinson (VP Engagement and Co-Chair of the Association's Environmental and Sustainability Working Group) will be chatting to Professor Mark Brandon, Dr Julia Cooke, Professor David Gowing and Professor Stephen Peake. There will be short talks from each academic, and time for questions. Talks will include:

  • Professor David Gowing - David will discuss Floodplain Meadows as an example of sustainable food production alongside high biodiversity and a number of valuable ecosystem services. The talk will include discussions on various aspects of this land use: past, present and future.
  • Dr Julia Cooke - STEM staff are regularly academic advisors for OU-BBC co-productions where the environment and sustainability are major themes. Julia will talk about recent programmes the OU has been involved in, including The Green Planet and Wild Isles, and how our leading academics contribute.
  • Professor Mark Brandon - Mark is a STEM professor and has spent his career researching the polar regions. He’ll give a perspective on what sustainability can mean to a field researcher and how we can minimise our impact whilst still doing vitally important climate research at the Open University.
  • Professor Stephen Peake - Stephen will share what students can do in the face of climate change.
