In an effort to foster inclusivity and ease the transition for new and returning OU Students, we are pleased to announce the rebrand of Freshers Fortnight to Welcome Week.
The term ‘Freshers Fortnight’ has long been synonymous with the first two weeks of university life, characterised by social events, parties and activities to immerse students in the university experience. Past evaluations of Freshers events at the Students Association have shown positive reactions, although feedback provided an insight into the uncertainty the name ‘Freshers’ brings to some students starting their OU journey or those who have already begun (particularly around events being suitable for the OU student or open to returning students).
We are committed to evolving our services to better meet the needs of our student community, and so we asked the Student Leadership Team and student volunteers to share their thoughts and opinions on the rebrand of 'Freshers Fortnight'. This helped us determine our next steps. We are pleased to share that Freshers has been renamed 'Welcome Week' and we hope this change will emphasise that events over the week are open to all OU students, whether you are new or returning.
The length of Freshers has also changed from two weeks to one, where we will deliver important information and fun events. Sessions will be held in the daytime and evenings – and over both weekends – and there is something for everyone to get involved with.
Our autumn Welcome Week will take place from Saturday, 28 September to Sunday, 6 October 2024! Don’t worry if you can’t make a session – this year we’ll be recording key events, so you won’t miss out.
