Team Open have reached the quarter-finals of University Challenge Series 31, after beating Durham in their second round match.

Team Open had a convincing win against Durham in their second round match on Monday 9 December 2024, reaching 180 points while Durham scored 115. You can catch up on the match on iPlayer if you are in the UK.

Their win means they reach the quarter-finals airing in 2025, taking their place in the final 8 teams left in the competition. In order to progress to the semi-finals, teams must win two matches in the quarter-finals. The date of the team's first quarter-final is yet to be revealed.

Their run so far in the competition has been as follows:

  • First round, 19 August 2024: Open - 190, UCL - 175
  • Second round, 9 December 2024: Open - 180, Durham - 115

This is the second year in a row that the Open University team have reached the quarter-finals of the show. They match last year's team's record of the furthest a Team Open has reached in the competition since the team of David Good, John Burke, Sue Mitchell and Lance Haward won in 1999 (find out more on our history on University Challenge here).

The team includes Karie (studying Art History), Hector (studying MSc in Finance), Nicky (studying Natural Sciences), Tom (studying Physics), and reserve member Ashara (studying History). You can find out more about the team and how they found the University Challenge experience on our Meet the team page.

We can't wait to see Team Open on our television screens again in 2025, and we hope you'll join us in cheering them on!
