I previously studied at Cardiff University and we handled research articles from Year one. I realise that that early may not be appropriate at the OU, but I do believe they should be integrated into study earlier than final year - it would come as a big shock to not work with them until my last year! I believe it would prepare students better for their year which counts the most to their degree and for further study, and boost the rigour of OU degrees.
