    Online tutorials and day schools

When I started studying with OU I was under the impression that tutorials and day schools would be mainly online with some face to face opportunities. The modules originally stated that the day and residential schools would be face to face. Once I'd actually started, it became clear that everything, even the residential school, is online. My experience of online tutorials and day schools with OU is that many attending have connection issues, sound quality is poor and tutors don't respond well when we tell them we can't hear them. This impacts discussions and learning, and it feels like tutors are really just reading from the PowerPoint. I totally understand that OU is distance learning, but I cannot understand that why day schools and residential schools are (in some subjects) only being offered online, when the student experience is so poor for many of us. I struggle with anxiety over attending online events and would perform so much better, particularly in longer situations such as day schools, if they were in person. I've spoken to tutors about this but have got nowhere.

12:36pm on 15 May 23 This is something which I also have concerns about, following the removal of residential schools from the language modules. It might be better to speak with the student support team as well as your tutors, so the the OU have a formal record.

1:24pm on 18 May 23 I agree with this wholeheartedly. I found out last weekend that it has been decided that exams are staying remote even post 2023/24 and there will be no more in-person tutorials. I have had one face-to-face tutorial since starting my degree and it was incredibly helpful especially for exam preparation. I'm not sure if this is just for maths or if it is a wider issue but I don't understand why the university is not consulting with students. They need to speak to us and ask our opinion and hear what we've got to say rather than just realising they've saved a load of money over the pandemic by not having to hire venues for exams and tutorials, and deciding that their profit is a priority. They are also not even communicating their decisions to us. I only found out because I was at a face-to-face tutorial and was told by a tutor there. This is something that I would never have found out otherwise. If they're going to introduce these rules without consultation then they need to be reducing student fees so that we benefit from the money saved too.

2:28pm on 3 Oct 23 I agree with what's been said. I'm very unhappy that the OU has cancelled Day Schools for A113.
